DACOU Melbourne has a collection of recent small acrylic paintings on canvas representing the Warlpiri communities of Yuendumu and Nyirrpi in the Western Desert, sourced from their arts centres.
Situated at Yuendumu, 300 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs, Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation was established in 1985. A subsidiary outstation arts centre was established at Nyirrpi, 160kms southwest of Yuendumu in 2005 to accommodate the artistic needs of the community there.
Artists represented in the DACOU Melbourne collection include the highly acclaimed Shorty Jangala Robertson, Rosie Nangala Flemming and Bessie Nakamarra Sims. Other artists include Maggie Napaljarri Ross, Mary Napangardi Brown and Long Maggie Nakamarra White.
Distinctly colourful and referencing traditional iconography, these small paintings depict the artists’ totemic and ceremonial relationship with their ancestral country and culture.
